Why the Iqonga Arts Festival?
South African townships lack access to platforms that nurture creativity, celebrate culture, and showcase local talent. For many residents, especially the youth, opportunities for artistic growth and cultural expression are limited — yet the passion, talent, and potential are abundant.
Iqonga Arts Festival is crafted to bridge that gap by bringing the stage to the streets, the spotlight to the unseen, and the celebration to the heart of the community. Through the Festival, we create a space where stories can be told, identities can be affirmed, and dreams can be awakened.
What do we do?
The “Iqonga Arts Festival” is a brainchild of Rainbow Arts Organsation which was established in 2015 and has become a landmark in the arts and culture development within Delft and surrounding communities around Cape Town. It is a specialised festival that fills a niche in the market for the arts and doubles up as an experiential learning for emerging artists. The programme seeks to produce a series of creative productions, so to reflect on the talent we have in our communities.
This Programme addresses several of the key challenges evident in the context of the living conditions faced by the communities. By providing experiential learning in a variety of performing arts forms, including theatre, spoken word, dance as diversified theatre performances. The program creates opportunities for youth engagement that fill the gap left by the lack of local arts venues such as theatres, galleries, and cinemas.
